Tips for Dealing with Moisture and Flooding in Your Basement
- If you have carpet installed in your basement, we suggest pulling back the wet carpet in the affected area and removing the carpet cushion from underneath.
- Once the water recedes, lift the carpet up with containers (coffee or ice cream containers work well), and set up some fans to promote air flow and drying.
- If the carpet was just damp on the edges, and not submerged in water for a longer period of time, it may be possible to re-use. Age of the carpet and the stability of the backing will determine if it can be re-used with a new cushion. You can consult with Montgomery’s to make that determination.
- Be sure that you have solved the water or moisture problem, before you reinstall any flooring. If the water issue was caused from something other than sump pump or power failure, you will want to address the problem before investing in new flooring.
- If you need to replace your flooring, there are new options for you to consider. A new carpet option would be Mohawk’s Air O. It’s a hypoallergenic solution that doesn’t absorb moisture and has an attached cushion. You can choose from a variety of styles, ranging from $3.50 to $5.00 a square foot.
6. Another option is choosing hard surface flooring instead of carpet. A budget-friendly alternative is Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP), which simulates wood plank flooring at a fraction of the cost. LVP offers realistic wood grain appearance with a vinyl product that is not affected by water. If your concrete floor is smooth, dry and in good shape, you can use a glue down LVP option, which can cost less than $2.00 a square foot. There many options to choose so you can find the right flooring for your home.
