Creating a beautiful, cohesive space doesn’t have to be complicated. In this edition of the Design Pulse, I’m sharing a few easy tips to help you pull any room together. As a Visual Merchandiser at Montgomery’s, I’ve learned some tricks to make your home feel stylish, inviting, and well put-together without the stress.
Tip #1: Define Your Personal Style
Finding your personal style can take time, and it often changes throughout your life. My main goal has always been to create spaces that are warm, inviting, and have a subtle designer touch.
The best way to discover your style is to explore:
- Go shopping and see what draws your attention
- Browse design magazines or websites
- Watch shows on HGTV
- Spend some time on Pinterest
Once you narrow down your style, it will be much easier to design a room that feels cohesive and intentional.
Tip #2: Choose an Inspiration Piece
After identifying your style, pick an inspiration piece to build your room around. This could be:
- A photograph from your favorite vacation
- A unique piece of furniture
- A statement rug or artwork
Your inspiration piece will guide your color scheme and overall design. Choose something that you love and won’t tire of quickly. For me, a beautiful rug or striking piece of art is often the perfect starting point.
Tip #3: Establish a Color Scheme
Your color scheme should reflect your inspiration piece. Here’s a simple method:
- Pick 2–3 dominant colors from your inspiration item
- Incorporate these colors evenly throughout your room
- Use three “levels” to distribute color:
- Level 1 – Floor: Use a rug to ground the space
- Level 2 – Furniture & accessories: add color through pillows, throws, lamps, and small décor pieces
- Level 3 – Eye level & above: include wall art, window treatments, chandeliers, or tall furniture
Evenly dispersing color ensures that your eye moves around the room, creating a harmonious and cohesive feel.
If you’re new to decorating, start with a smaller space like a guest bedroom. Experiment and enjoy the process. Your home should reflect your personality. Find that special piece that inspires you and let it guide your creative journey.
