In this edition of The Design Pulse, I’ll be exploring creative ways to turn ordinary walls into works of art. These wall treatments are timeless, unique, and beautiful and often, just a few thoughtful changes can make a wall feel intentional rather than like an afterthought in your design.

Board and Batten

Board and batten is a wall treatment that dates back to the Victorian era, when it was used to add architectural interest to flat walls. It’s a type of paneling made up of wide boards with narrow wood strips placed over the seams, creating a clean, geometric look. The wall itself acts as the “board,” while the raised strips are the “battens.”

One of the best things about board and batten is how customizable it is. You can play with spacing and patterns to make it your own. The most common approach is a wainscoting-style application, where battens are installed vertically, often about a foot apart, and finished with a wider trim board at the top and bottom for a polished look.

Another popular option is a full grid pattern, which feels more formal and structured but does require more time and precision to install. There really are no hard rules here. Experiment, get creative, and have fun with it.

Limewash

Limewash is a wall treatment that has been used since the Roman Empire, and it’s making a strong comeback. Made from slaked lime and water, limewash creates a soft, matte finish with natural movement and texture. Pigments can be added to achieve depth and variation in color that simply can’t be replicated with traditional paint.

Its renewed popularity comes from the warmth and character it brings to vertical spaces. Limewash is typically applied in a crosshatch motion, which gives the wall subtle shifts in tone and saturation. The result is a velvety, suede-like appearance that feels both inviting and elevated.

Beyond its beauty, limewash has practical benefits as well. It’s naturally antimicrobial, zero-VOC, and mold-resistant. Due to its moisture regulation, it’s an excellent choice for bathrooms and historic buildings, where breathability is especially important.

Wallpaper

The final transformative wall treatment I’ll touch on is wallpaper. Love it or hate it, there’s no denying the impact wallpaper can have on a space. From subtle textures to bold, large-scale patterns, wallpaper has the power to completely change the look and feel of a room.

Today’s wallpaper is a far cry from the frustrating versions of decades past. Quality, design options, and ease of installation have all improved significantly. Current trends focus on creating an experience, an atmosphere that invites you to slow down, get comfortable, and feel inspired by your surroundings. Large-scale patterns and full wall murals are becoming more common, pushing wallpaper into a new realm of purpose and creativity.

Don’t be afraid to go bold. Sometimes designing an entire room around a wallpaper you truly love can lead to the most memorable results.

These transformative wall treatments are sure to become conversation starters if you’re willing to take the plunge into this next level of design. Start small, try a powder room or guest bedroom, to see just how impactful these treatments can be. Most importantly, have fun and take chances.
