It’s that time of year again! The season of pumpkins, cozy layers, and a touch of spooky fun. As we move from Halloween into Thanksgiving, much of your fall season décor will naturally crossover, but if you love going all out for Halloween, the transition can take a little more planning.
In this edition of Design Pulse, I’m sharing my favorite tips for making the most of your fall decorations—while keeping your space stylish, cozy, and uniquely yours.
Tip #1: Go Thrifting
Fall is the perfect season to mix in treasures you’ve found secondhand. Antiques add character and instantly make your home feel layered and personal. Look for:
- Stacks of beautiful old books
- Vintage suitcases or trunks
- Large woven baskets
- Old ladders repurposed for décor
- Brass candlesticks or taper holders
- Unique art or ceramic vessels
These pieces create a backdrop that not only feels one-of-a-kind but also transitions beautifully from fall into winter.
Tip #2: Choose a Color Scheme That Feels Like You
Traditional fall colors of orange, red, and yellow will always have their place, but today’s palettes offer so much more. Think earthy greens, warm browns, ochres, berry tones, and even soft blues.
The key is to choose shades that make you feel calm, cozy, and at home. Don’t feel pressured to use a color just because it’s “typical fall.” Even pumpkins are evolving with mossy greens, creamy whites, and rich caramel tones that have become staples of the season.
One of my favorite combinations? Sage green, caramel, cream, and cinnamon. It feels fresh, warm, and timeless all at once. Once you settle on your colors, decorating becomes much easier and more cohesive.
Tip #3: Layer with Purpose
The secret to fall decorating is thoughtful layering. Decide first which elements will stay up for the whole season (through Thanksgiving), then add holiday-specific touches last.
- Foundation pieces: Thrifted baskets filled with cozy throws, vintage vessels filled with faux or dried branches, pillows in your chosen color palette.
- Seasonal texture: Faux leaf stems or garlands (wired versions are best for shaping), or dried plants and greenery for a timeless, natural look.
- Final touches: For Halloween, top it all off with your skeletons, cobwebs, and jack-o’-lanterns. Then, when November arrives, swap them out for pinecones, velvet pumpkins, or evergreen sprigs.
This approach means your base décor works hard all season long and you’re just switching out the “top layer” when the holiday changes.
Fall decorating should never feel like a chore. It’s about having fun, expressing your style, and creating a space you love spending time in. If your collection feels tired, consider donating or selling older pieces so you can refresh your look with new colors and textures.
Here’s to a cozy, creative, and joy-filled season.
