Montgomery’s Previews Expansion Ahead As Construction Begins
Montgomery’s has started a major expansion that will add significantly to the size of its Sioux Falls store.
The final Conlin’s Furniture going-out-of-business sale is over, and in its place, Montgomery’s has started an expansion into the property at 1703 W. 41st St., adjacent to its current location.
“It was a wonderful event. We were able to be introduced to lots of Conlin’s customers and hopefully bring them into the Montgomery’s family,” owner and president Eric Sinclair said. “We were super-excited about that, and it was a huge success.”
Construction crews have been demolishing the space down to a shell and then will start building it back up over the next several months.
“The plan is to make the facade of the facility look like an extension of the Montgomery’s store,” Sinclair said. “So the first step is to make it look cohesive with the Montgomery’s building and then connect it.”
The Conlin’s space will be converted into “a world-class design department that will have all our tools for flooring, window treatments, lighting and wallpaper and all the things the senior design team needs to do projects,” he continued.
The team also has been highly involved in designing the space.
“I don’t think we’ve ever involved our team as much as we have with this project,” Sinclair said.
“We said if they can dream anything with more space, what would it be, and then we took their feedback and combined it with what we think is our opportunity for growth. We involved our leadership team throughout and made sure everyone is excited about what we’re doing.”
The space will include a new clearance center, which Montgomery’s has never operated in Sioux Falls, and there will be room to expand bestsellers from other markets and popular price points in all categories.
“We’re also really going to expand our motion or reclining category, which is the fastest-evolving furniture category,” Sinclair said. “It’s moving so fast, and the technology coming into the marketplace is incredible.”
At a recent market event in North Carolina, the Montgomery’s team saw a sofa that had a power footrest, power lumbar, power headrest, heat, massage and immersive sound. A Bluetooth connection pairs to your television and speaker and customizes your audio experience while you’re sitting on the sofa.
Laser technology even allows the furniture to project a television at a wall, while the same sound experience is being built into a bed with an adjustable base.
“It’s full immersive sound in your bed. You’d swear you were in the theater,” Sinclair said. “It’s crazy what’s happening in motion and how that’s going to change the home. We want to be leaders in that.”
With the space freed up in the current Montgomery’s building, “we’re going to continue to add more in each category,” Sinclair said. “We want to make sure we have plenty of options in our most popular price points when people come in the store.”
The Conlin’s store is 36,000 square feet, and Montgomery’s plans to use about half of it. The other half is available for lease, and the hope is to find a business “that will complement home design and furnishings,” Sinclair said.
“We think there are a lot of home-related businesses that would find a fit here, especially because it includes 10,000 square feet of warehouse space, which is essentially impossible to find on 41st Street.”
The hope is that come Labor Day weekend, you’ll be shopping the expanded Montgomery’s store.
In the meantime, “we have been adding people and will continue to add people,” Sinclair said. “One of the most exciting things about this is that we can continue to build a senior design team with this space. We’ll have all the resources we need in-house to a wide variety of residential and commercial projects.”
